Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis treatment addresses the complex relationship between addiction and mental health. When co-occurring disorders are present, treating only one condition leaves individuals vulnerable to relapse. At Compass Recovery, we provide integrated mental health treatment alongside addiction care through specialized dual diagnosis therapy. Our expert team treats addiction and mental health simultaneously with evidence-based therapies, psychiatric support, and holistic healing. Dual Diagnosis Treatment: Comprehensive Care for Co-Occurring Disorders

Understanding Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual diagnosis treatment addresses the complex relationship between addiction and mental health conditions. When someone struggles with both substance use disorder and a mental health condition simultaneously, they have what’s known as co-occurring disorders. At Compass Recovery, we recognize that effective treatment must address both conditions together through integrated dual diagnosis therapy, as treating one without the other significantly increases relapse risk and prevents complete healing.

The connection between addiction and mental health is profound and often cyclical. Many individuals begin using substances to self-medicate symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health conditions. Over time, substance use worsens these underlying conditions, creating a cycle where each problem feeds the other. Breaking this cycle requires comprehensive mental health treatment delivered alongside addiction treatment by professionals trained in dual diagnosis care.

Why Integrated Mental Health Treatment Matters

Traditional addiction treatment that doesn’t address underlying mental health conditions leaves clients vulnerable to relapse. Similarly, mental health treatment that ignores substance use disorders cannot be fully effective while active addiction continues. Our approach to dual diagnosis treatment integrates addiction and mental health care from the beginning, ensuring that both conditions receive simultaneous, coordinated attention.

Research consistently shows that integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders produces significantly better outcomes than treating conditions separately or sequentially. When clients receive dual diagnosis therapy, they understand how their mental health and substance use interact, develop coping strategies that address both conditions, and build a foundation for lasting recovery and wellness.

Comprehensive Clinical Program

Compass Recovery is a highly sought-after treatment facility and our comprehensive clinical program provides the safety and expertise for our clients to uncover the true underlying issues concerning their addiction during the extended residential program. Without building this foundation, the client will be a chronic relapser with a high risk of death. It is a combination and multi-faceted clinical model that holds space for the healing that each of our clients go through, resulting in our clients’ return to their true and substance-free lives.

We also pride ourselves in our ability to direct our clients to their true passions. We prepare our clients for lifelong success and we want that success to be filled with happiness and purpose. We utilize Orange County and Southern California to enhance our therapy modalities.

Compass Recovery has master level licensed therapists providing therapy.

Co-Occurring Disorders We Treat

We treat individuals struggling with the following:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Bipolar/Mood Disorders
  • Personality Disorders

Evidence-Based Treatment Modalities

Our Professionals use the following Treatment Modalities:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Psychotherapy that is goal-oriented and evidence-based helps individuals improve their thought processes from negative distorted views to positive healthy thinking.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidenced-based practice developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., and was originally designed for clients with Borderline Personality Disorder who had suicidal tendencies. Research has found DBT to be effective for addictions and a wide range of mental health disorders, to include depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

DBT is an effective treatment for individuals who have difficulty controlling their emotions and behaviors. By teaching a set of skills that help individuals learn how to regulate emotions, modulate moods, tolerate distress and build meaningful relationships with others, a balanced and healthy life can be developed. This process is done in groups and individually with an intensively trained therapist.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), and behaviors that drive them to do something over and over (compulsions). Often the person carries out the behaviors to get rid of the obsessive thoughts.

Exposure and response prevention (ERP or EX/RP) is a method of cognitive behavioral therapy and form of exposure therapy in which individuals confront their fears and discontinue their escape response or resist any behaviors previously used to relieve distress.

Art Therapy

Professionally taught therapeutic group therapy using creative methods for healing and life-enhancing.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

A form of therapy used for treating Traumas. The individual will focus on emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on therapist directed lateral eye movements or other set external stimuli.

Trauma Therapy

We understand that substance abuse can be a result of painful life experiences. Post-traumatic stress is the psychological reaction to a severely stressful and physically threatening event that often results in anxiety, irritability, phobias, flashbacks, sleep disturbances, and depression. These symptoms can last for years and we are here to help.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

This is a form of counseling to help individuals learn to accept what is out of their personal control and commit to an action that improves and is healthy for their lives. The goal in therapy is to assist the individual into a meaningful life.

Psycho Drama

An experiential form of action method therapy where clients process in a safe, clinical environment unresolved issues of abuse, neglect, and abandonment that interfere with their recovery. Clients re-enact specific scenes from their past, current conflicts or future apprehensions that can sabotage their stability and sobriety. The goal is to gain new insights, resolve problems, and practice new healthier life skills and behaviors.

Guided Imagery & Mindfulness

Through the use of universal symbols and metaphors, the unconscious is brought forth to conscious awareness to dis-identify with all that is not the self and allow one to connect with their true identity.

Positive Therapy

Enables our clients to look at new possibilities, reevaluate their personal strengths and how to apply those strengths in relating to others and the world around them. This gives the opportunity to seize the beautiful life they have created with the solidarity of inner peace for lasting wellness.

The Importance of Specialized Dual Diagnosis Care

Treating co-occurring disorders requires specialized training and expertise. Not all treatment facilities have staff qualified to address the complex interplay between addiction and mental health conditions. Our team at Compass Recovery includes master-level licensed therapists with extensive experience in dual diagnosis treatment, ensuring that clients receive expert care for both their substance use and mental health conditions.

Our integrated approach means that from day one, clients work with professionals who understand how addiction and mental health interact. Psychiatric evaluation, medication management when appropriate, and therapeutic interventions are all coordinated to address the whole person. This comprehensive dual diagnosis therapy approach creates lasting change rather than simply managing symptoms.

Experiential Therapy and Movement

The use of different therapy modalities and facilitators results in a cohesive delivery of pertinent recovery tools and skill sets in a real world and exciting environment, leaving our clients feeling fulfilled and purposeful. One of the most integral parts of participating in treatment is remaining in the process as long as possible, and we are successful in providing the best environment for that to occur.

Movement has been scientifically proven to aid in memory processing and increase brain function. It also releases hormones and endorphins that increase healing of brain cells. Our clients reap the benefits of these processes because our treatment lessons and groups are done through experiential therapy and movement, all centered on recovery and developing each client’s passion. Movement and activity support the cognitive understanding of what we teach at Compass Recovery.

Clients learn that they can shift their emotional states through skills and will experience many different stimuli throughout a single day. What they learn while in treatment can be implemented in whatever life they create after their treatment is completed; fully prepared for life, and healed completely.

Common Co-Occurring Disorders and Addiction

Certain mental health conditions frequently co-occur with substance use disorders. Depression and anxiety are among the most common co-occurring disorders, with many individuals using alcohol or drugs to temporarily escape feelings of sadness, worry, or panic. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) also commonly occurs alongside addiction, as individuals attempt to numb traumatic memories and manage hyperarousal symptoms through substance use.

Bipolar disorder, characterized by extreme mood swings, presents particular challenges when combined with addiction. Substances may be used during depressive episodes to improve mood or during manic episodes to enhance euphoria or dampen agitation. Personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder, also frequently occur with substance use disorders and require specialized therapeutic approaches like DBT.

The Path to Integrated Healing

Recovery from co-occurring disorders is absolutely possible with proper dual diagnosis treatment. When both conditions receive simultaneous attention through integrated mental health treatment, clients experience profound transformation. They learn to manage mental health symptoms without substances, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and create lives worth living that support both sobriety and emotional wellness.

Our approach to addiction and mental health treatment goes beyond symptom management. We help clients understand the root causes of both their substance use and mental health challenges, process trauma, develop emotional regulation skills, and discover their purpose. This comprehensive healing addresses body, mind, and spirit, creating lasting recovery rather than temporary improvement.
